The following night, Edward arrived as Majka and Michelle's private chef wrapped the untouched food on the buffet table. Majka looked at him. "No one showed up for the Thanksgiving buffet, not even Michelle. That was a whole lot of effort for absolutely nothing."

"Daphne woke up three hours ago and went nuts," Edward said as he walked toward the bathroom.

"What?" Majka shrieked.

He left the bathroom carrying a bottle of pain reliever. "She had to be held down by a half-dozen vampires while Abbie filled her with sedative-laced blood. They reverse her surgery tomorrow morning. So, everyone who you want in here is there right now. The Fanaidhe are probably being difficult to me from their room, as usual."

"Headache?" asked Majka.

"It's better than last night." Edward picked up a glass and filled it with water from the sink. After he took two pain reliever tablets and drank the water, Edward set the glass in the sink. "They all woke up tonight, including the vampire who was made a mummy. About half of your vampire bodyguards hated the heartbeats. Bobby Fingers convinced them all to go to the promenade and use their upgrades to seduce women. Now, they like them. I doubt you'll see them much this weekend."

"Is Henri all right?"

"Henri's been calm since he woke up to Michelle listening to his chest. They were talking about how much they love each other's heartbeats and pulses when I left. Practically making out in the hospital bed."

"Daphne and Patrick are just as close. How is Henri okay and Daphne isn't?"

"Henri must have been mentally prepared to get his heartbeat back, like Daphne was mentally prepared to lose hers." Edward checked his watch and said, "Abbie needs us to go to the loading bay. She's expecting an important delivery at the first door open and wants both of us to take control of it as soon as it arrives."

"Oh, please do not let it be Alain delivering himself to me in a velvet-lined coffin," complained Majka. "It's already tense enough here without him to make it worse."

"Then we stake him and mark the crate: Return to Sender," said Edward. The chef looked at him, horrified. Edward scoffed. "Why does everyone overreact whenever I make a joke?"

"Because your joke voice is also your serious voice," Majka replied. She nodded to the chef. "Thank you for working so hard on all this with me. Everything you made looked amazing, and I'm sorry no one was here to appreciate it."

"They had good reason to miss it," the chef said, smiling. "Oh, don't worry. We'll do it much bigger for Christmas."

"Ye-e-eah. About that," began Majka.

"We fast for world peace on Christmas," lied Edward. He opened the apartment door. "Maj, we need to go. Abbie's counting on us, and we need to talk to the loading bay manager before the door opens."

"All right, all right," groused Majka, following Edward out of the apartment.
